Suspect in Tan murder nowhere to be found

By Francis Allan L. Angelo

ONE of the suspects in the killing of a businesswoman in Iloilo City has disappeared, investigators said.

S/Supt. Dennis Basngi, Iloilo City Police Office director, said the suspect is the person who is believed to have argued with slain Rose Gustilo-Tan six days before she was found dead on October 13 inside a motel in Mandurriao, Iloilo City.

Tan’s personal secretary Ma. Purificacion Catoera was also found dead in Dumangas on October 11.

Basngi said they tried to trace the suspect in his home in Iloilo province but he is nowhere to be found.

Agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) also visited the suspect in his home but investigators learned from the suspect’s in-laws that he and his wife went to Metro Manila early morning of October 11.

Tan and Catoera were last seen alive on October 10 when they attended mass and later went out for a business transaction.

On Wednesday morning, the suspect’s mother-in-law went to Manila to bring his one-year-old child.

The suspect even abandoned his candidacy for punong barangay of their village, the NBI learned.

Basngi said they received information that the suspect left in the evening of October 10 “but this is still being verified.”

“Maybe he is just around. What is surprising to some people who know him is that he suddenly became invisible,” Basngi said.

Basngi said they continue to gather more information to back up the circumstantial evidence they have gathered so far.

“If warranted, we can file the case already,” he said.

C/Insp. Orly Gabinete, ICPO investigation section chief, said they have drawn the facial sketch of the two suspects in the Tan-Catoera case.

Gabinete said they need to gather more statements from witnesses who can buttress the evidence they have collected.
