Many incumbent village heads lose

By Francis Allan L. Angelo

THE previous barangay elections saw some upsets and changing of the guards in key villages of Iloilo City.

Peter Abadiano is now the punong barangay of Brgy. Zamora-Melliza, City Proper at the expense of businessman Benny “Vulcan” Espinosa. Abadiano ran for city councilor in the May 10, 2010 polls under the group of Larry Jamora but lost.

Another member of the Espinosa clan, Noel lost to Keith “Dabing” Espinosa, wife of his nephew Jesus “Jing-Jing” Espinosa Jr. for headship of Brgy. Sta. Monica, City proper.

In Brgy. Ingore, LaPaz, which hosts the multibillion coal-fired power plant, Punong Barangay Ernie Poral lost to Jonathan Jalandoni in a close race Monday.

Punong Barangay Ruby Gallano of Bakhaw, Mandurriao lost to Remia Prevendido-Gregorie.

Nenita Yuson of Brgy. Bolilao, which hosts one of the biggest malls in the city, got her second term after trouncing her two rivals.

60% turnout

Jonathan Sayno of the Commission on Elections-Iloilo City said 60% to 70% of the more than 250,000 registered voters went out to vote Monday.

Sayno said voter turnout in the May 10 national elections was higher at 80%.

Despite the low turnout and return to manual voting, Sayno said election in the city was generally smooth.
