Lamis’ slay: Police probe zeroes in on illegal drugs

By Francis Allan L. Angelo

THE Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) is concentrating on illegal drugs as the motive for the assassination of a police officer in Iloilo City as week ago.

C/Insp. Orly Gabinete, ICPO Investigation Section chief, said they have dropped illegal gambling as the reason for the death of PO2 Jomarie B. Lamis along Muelle Loney Street, City proper.

Gabinete said they based their findings on the 55 illegal drug cases Lamis handled since he started as an intelligence operative in Iloilo City.

Illegal gambling was initially considered when Lamis was transferred from LaPaz to Guimaras last September after arresting several bet collectors of the illicit first two numbers game.

Gabinete said they have also identified the two gunmen who shot down Lamis last week while the victim was on his way home to Alalasan village in LaPaz.

The police tagged the assassins to an illegal drug syndicate based in Iloilo.

“Lamis handled many cases filed against suspected drug peddlers and the gunmen are involved in illegal drug trade, that’s why we are concentrating on the illegal drugs as the motive,” Gabinete said.

The Daily Guardian learned from police sources that the suspects have been following Lamis’ movement weeks before he was shot.

The gunmen were also seen following Lamis and his group in a town in the second district of Iloilo days before the incident.

The ICPO is also investigating reports that the gunmen got help from two persons who facilitated their escape from the city after Lamis’ shooting.

Gabinete said they will file the case when they have secured all the statements of witnesses that can tag the suspects to the shooting.
