Rape suspect shot, pal killed in shootout

By Francis Allan L. Angelo

A RAPE suspect was wounded while another was killed in a clash with the police in Leon, Iloilo 9pm Thursday.

The Leon PNP headed by Insp. Rex Jabian said the shootout happened when they went to Brgy. Buga, Leon to arrest rape suspect Elias Montaño, 50, of the said village.

Jabian said they were approaching a barn where Montaño and three others were drinking when gunfire erupted.

The shootout lasted for five minutes and when the smoke cleared, Montaño was wounded in his left leg and back. His drinking buddy, Nelson Calabio died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Montaño’s remaining companions fled and remain unidentified.

The police recovered a hand grenade, a caliber .38 revolver and an empty shell of a 12-guage shotgun.

Jabian said they have been attempting to arrest Montaño before but his neighbor and relatives refuse to cooperate with authorities.

The police have received reports that the rape suspect joined the Revolutionary Proletarian Army-Alex Boncayao Brigade (RPA-ABB) after he was accused of rape.

“But the RPA-ABB leadership said Montaño is not a member of their group,” Jabian said.
